Jan Štulíř deals with a wide range of topics related to human existence. He touches on the topics of personal identity, social roles and interpersonal relationships. The starting point is always the figure. The choice of subjects is intuitive, the starting impulse is always a strong emotion that leads to the development of a more complex story, which is never finished in the space of the painting. It is this ambivalence that gives room for different readings. The painting as Štulíř perceive it is a space without time and a clear historical anchor and becomes a symbolic space. In his work there have always been figures representing different social roles. We can see the bride, the boxer, the clown, the priest, the soldier. Man becomes the main actor in his paintings, but he is always surrounded by a landscape that represents the ultimate authority.
