Unusual Plant is part of Matěj’s series Biomorphic Organisms, in which he explores the transitions between the body, plant life, and living matter. In this body of work, he examines how physicality can extend into the vegetal realm and how organic forms shift when we look inside their structures. His interest lies in observing the interior of living organisms — in recording the movement and energy inherent within matter itself.

With Unusual Plant, Matěj redirects this gaze outward. The work functions as an anatomical study of a hybrid organism, something between a carnivorous plant and a parasite. It is a living form that grows, breathes, and mutates. In his process, he attempts to convey the sense that matter possesses its own agency — that the painting evolves independently, and that the act of painting becomes part of the organism’s own lifecycle.

For Matěj, painting is a physical act rooted in tension, destruction, and renewal. He works intuitively, responding to what unfolds on the surface and allowing the image to emerge rather than enforcing control. The body, the plant, or any other organism serve as vehicles through which he speaks about transformation and about what it means to be alive today. Unusual Plant expresses a kind of growth that is neither clean nor decorative, but bodily and instinctive. Matěj is drawn to the ways in which the organic and the technological intermingle — how matter becomes body, and how the body transforms into yet another form of life.
