Košťál draws inspiration here from the third circle of Dante’s Inferno, reserved for sinners who indulged in gluttony and unrestrained debauchery. This infernal realm is characterized by an eternal, icy downpour—a ceaseless deluge of filth and sludge in which the figure on the canvas now drowns.
