This canvas depicts a vampire who has consumed ordinary human food and now vomits it back up, unable to digest it. The scene also serves as a metaphor for alcoholism, which distorts our bodies and subjects us to the torment of nausea. The figure makes direct eye contact with us—passing judgment, as none of us are without sin.
