Here we encounter a modern-day Joan of Arc depicted as a chimera or manticore—a grotesque fusion of unrelated elements: a chimpanzee’s arm, knight’s armor, and tiger’s fur. Impaled by a sword draped with ivy (a symbol of immortality), her blindfold evokes the motif of justice, though here it screams in agony rather than standing impartial.
